Demand for duty-free yarn import

Value-added textile sector has asked the govt. to allow duty-free import of cotton yarn from all over the world, including India. In a joint press conference, The Council of All Pakistan Textile Associations Chairman Muhammad Zubair Motiwala along with Chairpersons / presidents of other associations held the govt. responsible for a 4.5% year-on-year decline in textile exports in Feb’21. On 23rd Dec’20, the govt. removed regulatory duty, but cotton yarn imports are still subject to custom duty and other taxes. They warned that export orders in hand will eventually be diverted to rival countries if cotton yarn is not made available in required quantity. They claimed the sector contributes over 62% in overall exports, provides 42% urban employment particularly to female workforce and earns the highest foreign exchange and supports approximately 40 allied industries.
